SAD is a depressive illness caused by shortened daylight hours and a lack of sunlight Being animals, we are all affected to some extent by changes in light and the seasons. Most of us like comfort food and tend to feel more lethargic in winter. Some of the symptoms of SAD cause discomfort and a noticeable change in mood, but not serious suffering. This is called "Sub-syndromal SAD" or "Winter Blues". In more serious cases, SAD is a much more serious illness which prevents normal function without appropriate treatment.
