The Importance of Cybersecurity

June 12, 2023

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting your electronic information from risks and vulnerabilities. Some risks would include unauthorized access, use, disclosure, interception, or data destruction.

Today’s world is surrounded by evolving technology, and it is crucial to know how to keep yourself safe online. The more technology grows, the more vulnerable we become to cyber-attacks. Cybersecurity helps us protect our data and systems from these said threats.

Students are often the target of cyber-attacks. If a student’s personal information is stolen from a cyber-attack, it could be used to commit identity theft. This could then ruin the student’s credit and create a mountain of debt that is not their doing.

The following are the most common types of cyber-attacks:

  • Phishing attacks – involves tricking users to click on malicious links or attachments, that could lead to theft of sensitive information.
  • Malware attacks – malware (designed to disrupt or damage a computer system) software that infects computers and devices to steal information or hijack devices.
  • Denial-of-service attacks – prevents users from accessing a system or service.
  • Ransomware attacks – malware that encrypts files or systems and demands a ransom to decrypt them. This could lead to the loss of essential data.
  • Man-in-the-middle (MitM) Attacks – an attacker intercepts communications between two parties.
  • SQL Injection – exploits vulnerabilities in web applications to inject malicious SQL (a program that is used to store and process information in a relational database) code into the database.

Cybersecurity helps protect us from these and other threats. Be aware of the risks and take steps to keep your personal information safe both offline and online.
