National STD Awareness Month

STDs are infections that are passed from one person to another during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. They are more common than not and a lot of those affected don’t have any symptoms. STDs can be dangerous, however most STDs are easy to treat!

Common STDs Include:

  • Chlamydia: caused by a bacterial infection. Often does not have symptoms, but is easy to treat once diagnosed.
  • Genital Warts: growths on the genital area and around the anus that is caused by HPV. These are easy to treat and are not life threatening.
  • Gonorrhea: caused by a bacterial infection that can be cured with antibiotic medication.
  • Hepatitis B: a virus that can cause liver disease, which is spread through sex or sharing personal hygiene items like razors or toothbrushes.
  • Herpes: a common STD that infects your mouth and or genitals that causes blistery sores. There is no cure, but symptoms are treatable.
  • HIV & AIDS: HIV is an infection that breaks down your immune system and can lead to AIDS. There is no cure, but treatment can help you stay healthy.
  • Syphilis: a common bacterial infection that is spread through sex. Easily cured with antibiotics, but it can cause permanent damage if you don’t get treated.

How can you prevent STDs?

  1. Use protection!
  2. Avoid sharing towels or underclothing
  3. Wash before and after intercourse
  4. Get vaccinated
  5. Avoid substance abuse
  6. Get tested!
