NATIONAL INSURANCE AWARENESS DAY

College students have a lot going on during the school year. Reviewing their health insurance policy is not something they even think about adding to their plate. However not knowing what is covered by their insurance coverage could really cause them harm. Most insurance’s cover things like:

  • Health and Wellness Visits
  • Chronic disease management, with specific discussions of diabetes, hypertension, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), HIV disease, and mental illness,
  • Mental and behavioral health services
    • Behavioral health treatment, such as psychotherapy and counseling
    • Mental and behavioral health inpatient services
    • Substance use disorder (commonly known as substance abuse) treatment
  • Vision and oral health problems
  • Asthma
  • Unhealthy eating or obesity
  • Chronic stress, Anxiety and Depression
  • Risk-taking behavior such as aggression, violence and unsafe sexual activity
  • Physical inactivity

These are all services that are extremely beneficial to students. Utilizing these services has been proven to improve school performance, attendance, educational and personal achievements and over all better health.

Here are some ways to make your health insurance work for you.

  • Read your plans Summary Plan Description (SPD)
  • Use your health coverage
  • Review Your Plan’s Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Coverage
  • Look for Wellness Programs
  • Know how to file an appeal if a claim is denied
  • Read and understand the limitations and exclusions of your policy, if you have questions call and ask
