Since most of us are home, you very well may have already done your seasonal cleaning. If you have, that is great; but for those who have not gotten around to it yet, here are some tips to help make the process a little easier.
1. Get sorting
Before you can get down to the “cleaning” part, you will need to get organized. As you sort items in your house or apartment, be ruthless when deciding what exactly you need to keep.
If, in the process, you discover items you forgot you had, donate them! You have gone this long without them, so clearly you don’t need them.
Don’t be afraid to throw things away – there’s no point in crowding your space with anything that doesn’t have special meaning or isn’t used regularly. This includes going through old books, CD’s, movies, shoes, paperwork, etc.
2. Break it up
When tackling a large project like seasonal cleaning, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. To circumvent this problem, set small goals for yourself and organize in increments. Clean out your desk one day – finally recycling those papers you wrote two semesters ago – and confront your closet the next.
3. Organize
Taking the time to sort through your closet and truly organize it will make your daily routine infinitely easier. Similar to the sorting process you used to clean the rest of your apartment, you should carefully consider what clothing you wear regularly and what you could do without. Donate unused clothes, shoes and accessories and store winter items that you won’t be needing for a few months.
4. Try rearranging your space
Rearranging everything makes cleaning and finding things significantly easier. If you like the current arrangement of the space, then try to maximize the space. This will also help with cleaning neglected areas.
5. Start cleaning
Now that you’re organized, you can finally start cleaning! Open your windows and let in that spring breeze as you dust, vacuum and scrub your way around your home. This is also the perfect opportunity to remove any stains or odors from furniture or carpeting that have been bothering you all winter.
6. Spruce up your apartment
Once you’ve got everything looking shiny and new, take this opportunity to give your living space a bit of a face lift. Rearrange the furniture in your bedroom, apply a fresh coat of paint or add some throw pillows to your couch. Even something as small as a fresh bunch of flowers can brighten up your room!
