How to Properly wash hands (and why it's important)

April 13, 2020

Everyone knows that we should wash our hands, but do we really know why? And are we washing them correctly? We touch everything from money to doorknobs, toilet handles, books, shared computers even handshakes. These are just some of the things that we touch daily. All the thing we touch carry millions of germs such as:

  • Dirt
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Bodily fluids
  • Human/animal waste

Some of these microscopic organisms you pick up can cause illnesses such as:

  • Pneumonia
  • Pink eye
  • The flu
  • Warts
  • And the most recent, COVID-19

Good news! We can prevent ourselves from contracting these organisms by just doing a simple thing as washing our hands. But you must wash your hands correctly to be able to kill everything.

Here is what you need to do:

  • Wet your hands
  • Apply enough soap to cover your whole hand (front, back and fingers)
  • Rub hands palm to palm
  • Rub fingers and nails
  • Wash with soap for at least 20 seconds
  • Rinse hands
  • Dry thoroughly with a single use towel
  • Use the towel to turn off the faucet

These simple steps can really prevent the spread of germs and keep everyone healthy.
