What's a Thyroid?

January 10, 2020

We often hear about the issues associated with thyroid complications. But what is a thyroid? Where is it? What does it do? Keep reading to find out.

What is a thyroid, and where is it?

Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland found at the base of your neck, below the Adam’s apple.

What does it do?

Your thyroid produces the thyroid hormone, which travels through the blood to all parts of the body. This hormone controls your body’s metabolism, including how fast you burn calories and the speed of your heartbeat.

What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is when your body does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone. This can slow down your metabolism, cause muscle weakness, weight gain, a puffy face, and more. If you suspect you have hypothyroidism, contact your physician.

What is hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism causes the thyroid to make more of the thyroid hormone than the body needs. This can cause extreme weight loss, an increased appetite, feelings of anxiousness, rapid or irregular heartbeat, and more. If you suspect you have hyperthyroidism, contact your physician.
