American Stroke Awareness

May 6, 2019

Do you know what a stroke is? Or what the signs of a stroke are? I didn’t either. A stroke is the loss of blood flow to the brain which causes damage to the tissues within the brain. Symptoms of a stroke are usually shown in the upper part of the body. Here are some other signs and symptoms to be on the lookout for:

  • Paralysis
  • Numbness or weakness in the arm, face and legs usually effecting only 1 side of the body
  • Trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Confusion
  • Slurring speech
  • Vision problems ex. trouble seeing, blackened/blurred vision
  • Trouble walking
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • Dizziness
  • Severe, sudden headache

There are 3 main types of strokes:

  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
  • Ischemic Stroke
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke

While strokes cannot be prevented there are things you can do to reduce your chances of having one. Here are just a few things I found that will not only reduce the chance of a stroke but several other health issues at the same time.

  • Maintaining a healthy diet and limiting your salt intake, saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol
  • Getting in at least 2.5 hours a week of brisk exercise
  • Alcohol consumption should be in moderation
  • Not using tobacco
