Winter Skin Care Tips

February 19, 2019

Winter can wreak havoc on your skin, making it dry, itchy, and irritated. Even the things we love about winter, such as sitting by a roaring fire or even hot showers, can dry your skin. However, there are many simple ways to combat the causes of dry winter skin and help keep your skin feeling moist all season long.

Here are 10 tips for healthy winter skin:

  1. Invest in a humidifier
  2. Lower the thermostat and avoid dryness
  3. Limit shower time and temperature
  4. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
  5. Moisturize frequently, especially your hands
  6. Eat right and stay hydrated
  7. Don’t go out in the cold with damp skin
  8. Avoid wet socks and gloves
  9. Use sunscreen
  10. Exfoliate lightly

Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist and director of clinical research at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York explained,

“As winter temperatures fall and the air gets drier, your skin pays the price. This can lead to cracks in the outer layer of skin, loss of hydration, and ultimately, inflammation.”

When your skin loses its moisture barrier, it weakens its ability to protect itself. It is very important to pay attention to your skin’s seasonal needs and adjust accordingly!
