If you’ve ever heard someone say they’re only eating alkaline foods you’ve probably wondered what they’re talking about. What exactly is alkaline? Your organs process the foods you eat, neutralizing the acidic and alkaline foods – alkaline being easier to neutralize. Some people believe that eating more alkaline foods will assist your body into digesting the foods easier (because they’re not acidic) and therefore are more beneficial for your body.
pH (potential of hydrogen), is a measure of the acidity and alkalinity of our body tissue and fluids. It’s ranked on a scale of 0-14, 0 being acidic and 14 being alkaline and 7 being neutral (neither acid nor alkaline) such as water. Your blood should be between 7.35 and 7.45 while your stomach (and the acid it contains) is around 3.5 or below. Your urine will change depending on what you eat.
The idea is, the more alkaline food you eat, the healthier you become. However, after searching through countless sites and researching this diet, I haven’t found an actual list of benefits aside from vague claims (that cannot be 100% true) such as “fights off cancer”. I have also read that many researchers agree that there is no real proof or evidence that this particular diet benefits your body by affecting your bloods pH level in any way.
There’s not much science supporting the diet actually helps your body but you’ll probably still experience weight loss as the diet is mostly fruits and vegetables. Science says that your diet does not affect the pH of your blood and you may end up depriving you body of essential nutrients says Allison Childress, R.D., a nutrition sciences instructor at Texas Tech University.
