Exercise Your Brain

May 29, 2023

Whether you know it or not, as we age, our brains require care and exercise. As strength training helps our muscles, when we work out our mental fitness, we can help improve our memory, attention, brain speed, people skills, intelligence and navigation. Your brain needs variety to make sure it is being constantly challenged. There are six ways to build your mental fitness, and they are the following:

1. PLAY GAMES
Brain games that work your mental fitness include crossword puzzles, Sudoku games, and other games that focus on logic, math, word, and visuospatial skills (having the ability to identify visual and spatial relationships among objects).

2. READ A VARIETY OF BOOKS
Books can contain a variety of different characters, information, and facts. By reading a variety of topics from historical fiction to romance, it can help challenge your brain. Reading makes your brain workout by imagining the different time periods, cultures, and people, while you learn new things and build your vocabulary.

3. USE ALL YOUR SENSES
When you are trying new activities to work your brain, make sure to choose ones that trigger all five of your senses. Some examples may include taking a cooking class, or even visiting a farmer’s market. When you utilize all your senses, you are helping to strengthen your brain by focusing on smelling, touching, seeing, tasting, and hearing all at the same time.

4. DAILY MEDITATION
Meditation is known to calm your body and mind; help you relax and reduce anxiety and stress. What meditation can also do is help improve your memory and processing power, by creating a calm mental state.

5. LEARN A NEW SKILL
The saying, “you can’t teach an old dog, new tricks,” proves untrue when it comes to your brain. No matter your age, you can learn new skills. When you learn a new skill, you are engaging and challenging your entire brain.

6. TRAIN YOUR BRAIN
There are many different ways you can train your brain nowadays. From courses, online programs, books, and games. You’ll see that this training helps sharpen your response time and attention.
