October 17, 2022

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a childhood condition of extreme irritation and anger where the person has frequent, intense temper outbursts. DMDD can affect between 2 percent and 5 percent of children.

Typically, this disorder begins before the age of 10, and is not given to children under the age of 6 or adolescence over 18. Some signs and symptoms of this disorder would be:

  • Irritable and angry mood most days or even every day

  • Severe temper outbursts (verbal or behavioral)

    • Affects development level

  • Has trouble functioning due to irritability in more than one place

*Children must have symptoms steadily for twelve months or more

A few treatments that are used to cope with this disorder include medications and psychotherapy. For medications, stimulants and non-stimulants are utilized for people to struggle with this disorder. Sometimes, an atypical antipsychotic may also be used for children with severe temper outbursts that typically involve physical aggression towards people or property.
