PrEP

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (also known as PrEP) is a way for people to prevent HIV infection. HIV, also known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, can be spread through sexual contact. The PrEP method is not for people who have HIV, but rather those who are at a high risk of contracting HIV.

PrEP is provided in the form of a pill, commonly known as Truvada. This pill is composed of two medicines called tenofovir and emtricitabine. Truvada is meant to be taken daily.

Additionally, it is meant to be used in combination with other HIV preventative medications. If a Truvada user were to encounter HIV, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV by up to 99 percent when taken as instructed by your prescriber.

College health services have seen a uptick in the prescription writing for PrEP which is a good sign that students and medical professionals are taking proper precautions in the fight against HIV. While PrEP helps to protect against HIV, it does not prevent against other STDs. Condoms should still be used during intercourse as a preventative measure.
