Winter Produce

Have you ever noticed how certain fruits and vegetables taste better at different times of the year? There are plenty of fruits and vegetables that are available all year long, but when a fruit or vegetable is in season, the flavor is noticeably better. And it's easier on your wallet!

Seasonal dishes are best when made with seasonal produce. For example, your tomato salad is going to taste much better in summer time than in the middle of December. Likewise, your butternut squash bisque will be more flavorful in January than in July. Winter is for more hearty ingredients and, surprisingly, sweet citrus fruits – think the classic fall combination of cranberry and orange.

Vegetables belonging to the cruciferae family (Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, collards, and Brussels sprouts) may suppress the thyroid if eaten raw or unfermented. An example of a fermented cruciferous vegetable is cabbage such as sauerkraut or kimchi which are known for their health benefits.
